Waking up with Lainey in my bed unrestrained is a joy I’m not deserving of, but I soak it up anyway. Her head on my chest, her arm around my waist, her thigh over my hips- if I believed in a heaven, this is what mine would look like. She’s safe and she’s here. My lungs can expand fully for the first time in years.

I stroke the hair at the back of her head as I lean in to press a kiss to her forehead, allowing myself the moment to pretend that we’re normal. In this moment, Lainey is a stay-at-home trophy wife that enjoys spending her time reading and dancing through the house to music that only she can hear. I’m an investment banker that takes her on dates to fancy, upscale restaurants and whisks her away three times a year on extravagant vacations.

We aren’t those things though. We aren’t any of them. Lainey is my victim and I am The Devil. I don’t get to stay in bed all day whispering sweet nonsense into her ears and kissing her all over. I have shit to do today, business to handle, fear to instill. “Wake up, Principessa. Come shower with me before breakfast.”

She moans and shifts her head, tightening her arm around my waist. “Are you going to let me out?”

“Of this room? Sure.”

“What do I have to do for you to trust me outside the house?”

“You’re getting closer.” It’s a weak, noncommittal answer, but it’s the best one I have. There are so many factors to me being comfortable with her outside the house. I’m not there yet, but I will be some day. I know I can’t hold her captive forever, no matter how much sealing her away appeals to me. She needs sunlight and interaction. More than just a plant or a goldfish, she needs... more. But fuck, I like having her all to myself.
